Overview

Precision Planting is an agriculture business that engineers products to be retrofitted to farming equipment. While working with their Precision Cloud team I was tasked with designing a workforce planning application for managers of a new manufacturing facility that was soon to begin operations.

The problem at hand

With so many different teams on the floor, it became difficult for admin staff to communicate information to all employees and keep track of attendance.

Goals

As an internal-facing team, much of our work focused on creating tools to assist other departments. With the Huddle Form application, there were several key goals we had in mind to help support HR and managers as they supervised team members in the manufacturing facility.

  1. Establish a process for the HR / administrative team to communicate essential facility updates to supervisors.

  2. Create an engaging way for supervisors to incorporate these updates into their daily morning briefings with teammates.

  3. Make employee data viewable and easily accessible to admin staff and management.

Keep it simple, staff

To accomplish these objectives a simple aesthetic was chosen for the application, with a heavy emphasis on the discoverability of the calendar events and employee rosters.

One tap away

Users can access the calendar, team roster, and upcoming event details all from the dashboard via modal overlays on tap. This streamlined access from the dashboard ensures managers will be able to get to core features quickly and pain-free.

Guided walkthroughs

To help encourage engagement with the morning huddle process (who doesn't love another meeting?) I decided to turn the entire process into a guided progression. This ensures every supervisor has the same walkthrough experience while also clarifying what information they will cover with teammates.

Admin access

To help streamline the communication pipeline between admin and management I created a 'huddle form' that admin or HR could fill out. This in-turn would auto-populate the calendar with a new event that supervisors will be able to access for their daily stand-ups.

Takeaways

Having a firm grasp of the expectations and requirements throughout the product design experience was essential to this project. From the start, we knew the app would have to manage employee data, give admin staff an easy way to create meeting events for supervisors, and streamline the way that daily meetings are held. Being aware of the needs of the core users of the app allowed me to fine-tune the interaction design of the app to best fit the needs of its users.
